About Enhanced First Nations Education Programs and Services

First Nations students who attend schools in our district are able to access enhanced programs and services that go above and beyond what is available to all students. These programs and services, also known as “Enhancements,” respond to the unique needs of First Nations learners and aim to:

• Encourage First Nations community engagement.
• Improve academic achievement for First Nations students.

Enhancements are funded through the Provincial Enhanced Education Program and Services Fund. There is no cost to parents of First Nations children to access enhancements.

Goals

The overall goals of enhancements are to:

• Reduce the academic achievement gap between First Nations students and non-First Nations students in New Brunswick public schools.
• Provide New Brunswick First Nations children with a welcoming school environment and a quality educational experience that is both relevant and recognizes their cultural background.
• Promote positive learning and working relationships between First Nations communities and school districts.

Background

Enhancements are provided in our district through an agreement between the Province of New Brunswick, First Nations Chief and Band Council, the District Education Council, and the Director of First Nation Education. The agreement outlines goals, principals, roles, responsibilities, and costs for delivering the enhanced programs and services.

Enhancements are available within each of the six Wolastoqiyik communities. Please see the list below to identify schools in your area where enhancement is available.

Eligibility

Enhancements are only available to eligible students. To determine if your child meets the eligibility criteria, please contact your school’s principal.
