Fredericton (N.B.) — The Fredericton Police Force (FPF) and Anglophone School District West (ASD-W) are pleased to announce that the School Resource Officer (SRO) program will be in place for the 2025–2026 school year. Under this agreement, two officers will be assigned to Fredericton area high schools and middle schools, with dedicated office space at both Leo Hayes High School and Fredericton High School.

Constable Stephen Murphy will be assigned to Fredericton High School, Bliss Carman Middle School, and George Street Middle School. Cst. Murphy has served with the Fredericton Police Force for 18 years. Over the course of his career, he has worked in Patrol Response, the Community Policing Investigative Unit, and Special Crimes. He currently serves as Team Leader of the Tactical Emergency Medics Team, drawing on his extensive background and training to support frontline operations.

Constable Brandan Goodyear will be assigned to Leo Hayes High School, Devon Middle School, and Nashwaaksis Middle School. He has served with the Fredericton Police Force for three years and previously served three years in the Canadian Armed Forces, including one year as a fully qualified Military Police Officer. Currently assigned to Patrol, Constable Goodyear is actively involved in multiple sports, coaches volleyball, and mentors youth as part of his community engagement efforts.

The SROs will work within the school community to ensure safety, provide law-related education, build positive relationships with youth, and serve as an on-site liaison between schools and law enforcement. Above the stated mandate, the SROs will also provide enforcement, intervention, and safety education, fostering a safe environment for schools within our community.

“The return of the School Resource Officer program reflects our deep commitment to safety, collaboration, and meaningful connections within our community,” said Fredericton Police Force Chief Gary Forward. “By placing officers in schools, we can engage positively with youth and take proactive steps to support the well-being of students, their families, and the broader community.”

“With more than 6,800 students across our six Fredericton high schools and middle schools—including approximately 2,400 at Fredericton High School and 1,850 at Leo Hayes High School—each one is a community in its own right,” said ASD-W Superintendent David McTimoney. “The return of school resource officers gives us another partner in supporting those communities, helping to foster strong connections, respond quickly when needed, and maintain a safe, welcoming environment for learning and working. This renewed partnership with the Fredericton Police Force will serve our students, staff, and families well.”

This three-year renewable partnership reflects a shared commitment by the Fredericton Police Force and Anglophone West School District to school safety, student well-being, and community connection.

The School Resource Officer program represents the implementation of Recommendation #18 from the Fredericton Community Safety Task Force, which calls for enhanced community-based crime prevention. The initiative also supports the school district’s core values of well-being, belonging, and citizenship.

The Fredericton Community Safety Task Force brought together government, police, health, and community partners to develop 47 recommendations focused on prevention, support, and collaboration to address root causes of crime and enhance community safety, with many actions already underway to make Fredericton safer and more supportive for all residents

The officers began their assignments on Aug. 25, 2025.
