ASD-W educators joined their colleagues from other anglophone districts in the province last month at Fredericton’s Cuffman Street Elementary to learn strategies to discourage tobacco use and vaping among their students. On Feb. 26, teachers and principals took part in Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE Canada)’s STOMP—Students TOgether Moving to Prevent Tobacco Use—program training.
The PHE Canada initiative, started as a national pilot program in our district at Nackawic High School in 2022 and Oromocto High School in 2023, centres around education, student involvement, and deterrence through vape detectors in places where students gather. This school year, it was also adopted by Minto, Southern Victoria, McAdam, and Leo Hayes high schools, and Cambridge Narrows Community School.
ASD-W’s seven schools are among 26 participating in both the province’s anglophone and francophone school districts.
