Fredericton, N.B.—The Fredericton Police Force and Anglophone School District West are pleased to announce that the role of School Resource Officer (SRO) will be returning to Fredericton in the near future. This agreement will see two officers designated to Fredericton area high schools and middle school with dedicated office space at both Leo Hayes High School and Fredericton High School.

The SRO’s role will be to provide support to the school community, which includes students, parents, staff, and administrators. The mandate of the SRO will be public safety and law-related education, relationship building through positive role modelling, community liaison, and on-site law enforcement.

“The cornerstone of the SRO’s role is community policing, and with officers stationed in our schools, it will foster the development of positive attitudes toward police and will help nurture relationships between youth, their families, and public safety partners,” said Chief Martin Gaudet. “Above the stated mandate, the SROs will provide enforcement, intervention, and education, fostering a safe environment for schools within our community.”

We are excited to see a return of school resource officers to our ASD-W City of Fredericton high schools and middle schools. With a combined enrolment of over 6,500 students in these six city schools, including 2,250 at Fredericton High School and 1,710 at Leo Hayes High School, we see communities within the community,” said ASD-W Superintendent David McTimoney.

The agreement is a joint partnership between the Fredericton Police Force and Anglophone School District West.

“Our school administration, education support services teams, and school staff will partner with a school resource officer in efforts to build and maintain a positive learning and working environment within the school community, building strong relationships, and responding quickly to emergencies. Creating a safe environment within our schools is always a priority and this partnership strengthens the opportunity to do so, said McTimoney.
